I celebrated my birthday this year by travelling to Boston to view the Gore Roll at the New England Historic Genealogical Society. My hope was to capture as many photos of it as possible, and I was pleased to discover I had carte blanche access to the manuscript.

My initial impression was one of endearment. This American heraldry treasure has humble origins which were immediately apparent upon inspection. John Gore was a carriage painter and the cover of the book was well loved and speckled with globs of paint. I liked to imagine the unassuming journal being tossed around the artist’s workshop, haphazardly collecting castoff particles during his day-to-day crafting.

I was allowed to take many photographs. I’ve put off sharing these and writing about them. It’s about time I got around to it. I will have more images from this at an unspecified time in the hopefully near future.
